"Before I begin I have some fantastic news to share with you all!!  It's official I've been crowned ESSEX WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2017-2018 as well as being honoured in the TOP-10 INTERNATIONAL WEDAWARD WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS 2017 and 2018."

Right so about me, well I’m Gavin and the owner of gavin conlan photography Ltd and I’m a professional wedding photographer based in Halstead Essex.  My journey, well it started off by chance really back in the summer of 2002, I don’t come from a photography background in fact when I was studying the dream was to become an architect.

2002 started and I was working at Blockbuster Video in Dagenham, I loved that job as I’m obsessed with movies.  Unfortunately, I was moving away from Dagenham in the summer which forced me into looking for another job. I successfully gained employment within the Ministry of Defence working for Defence Exports.  My first role in the MoD was general admin support but I knew it wasn’t really for me, my office was next door to the video production unit which intrigued me, and I managed to integrate myself into the team permanently.  I did think about a career in video but after studying at the National Film & Television School I realised that video wasn’t really for me, I loved it don’t get me wrong, but something was missing.  Nowadays though I do love shooting video for my business and personal adventures.

Fast forward to December 2002 and it happened that lightbulb moment, the excitement of finally finding something that I loved.  Before the December I had never really taken a photograph but a planned trip to New York City changed all that, armed with my first digital camera bought from Argos for £30 I took 645 photographs.  I came back from New York City with this new photography obsession, I started photographing everything and I mean everything even winning my first photo competition within 3 months of getting back from NYC.

I’ll be forever grateful to everyone in the video production unit as they really supported me and invested heavily into my photography education, without them I wouldn’t have had the career I had.  It’s only when I look back over my Government photography career that I truly appreciate the people and places I’ve been blessed to photographed.  Photographing our Prime Ministers, members of the Royal Family, Overseas Royalty, UK and International Trade Shows and Exhibitions, touring with the Red Arrows throughout the Middle East and spending over a month on assignment in China.  My last big assignments before leaving the Government were the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics ending with photographing Team GB’s Reception Party in London, IDEX (International Defence Exhibition) in Abu Dhabi and a tour to Poland (Warsaw, Krakow and Gdansk) to shoot photographs for our Government image library.

In March 2013 I took a massive “leap of faith” and left my civil service post to pursue my wedding and portrait photography business full time. With the support of my family and the redundancy package I secured for myself I started this new adventure full of excitement.  I’ll be honest with you it hasn’t been easy, some days I really do miss the security of regular income and benefits, self-doubt can still kick in from time to time too, but the excitement and joy of working for myself always outweigh these fears and I wouldn’t change anything.

This past April marked my 5th year in business, my journey to date has included some of the most beautiful UK and destination wedding and engagement assignments in Italy, France, Greece and Slovenia as well as taking on photography jobs throughout Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam and France.
